Secretary of State John Kerry said on Friday that the United States is prepared to engage in military-to-military talks with Russia concerning Syria. “The president believes that a military-to-military conversation is an important next step,” Mr. Kerry said, “and I think, hopefully, it will take place very shortly.”

Ähnlich von der BBC:

US-Russian military talks on Syria could take place „very shortly“, US Secretary of State John Kerry says.
The US has been concerned about Moscow’s increased military presence in Syria.
„We’re looking for ways in which to find a common ground,“ said Mr Kerry.

Das ist noch hinreichend unscharf. Mal sehen, was noch dazu an Details kommt.

Nachtrag: Und schon reden die Verteidigungsminister miteinander…

This morning, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter had a constructive conversation with the Russian Minister of Defense Sergei Shoygu on the situation in Syria. The secretary and the minister talked about areas where the United States and Russia’s perspectives overlap and areas of divergence. They agreed to further discuss mechanisms for deconfliction in Syria and the counter-Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) campaign. The secretary emphasized the importance of pursuing such consultations in parallel with diplomatic talks that would ensure a political transition in Syria. He noted that defeating ISIL and ensuring a political transition are objectives that need to be pursued at the same time. Both the secretary and the minister agreed to continue their dialogue.

Noch ein Nachtrag – vom Wall Street Journal:

Russia Moves Its First Tactical Fighter Jets to Base in Syria
WASHINGTON—Russia has moved its first fighter jets to a growing base in Syria, defense officials said Friday, raising new concerns Moscow is preparing to play a direct role in helping embattled President Bashar al-Assad against Islamic State militants.
Moscow’s military moves came as U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter spoke to his Russian counterpart about Russia’s deepening role in Syria, ending a long pause in high-level military ties between the two countries.
Defense officials said at least four tactical fighter jets had arrived at the rapidly expanding airfield on the Syrian coast south of Latakia.
