US-Kommandeur in Afghanistan entschuldigt sich für Angriff auf MSF-Hospital

Der neue Kommandeur der NATO-Mission Resolute Support in Afghanistan und zugleich Chef der US-Truppen am Hindukusch hat sich bei einem Besuch in Kundus am (heutigen) Dienstag für die Bombardierung des Krankenhauses der Organisation Ärzte ohne Grenzen (Médecins Sans Frontières, MSF) entschuldigt. Bei dem fehlgeleiteten Luftangriff auf das Hospital waren am 3. Oktober mindestens 42 Menschen ums Leben gekommen. US-General John Nicholson traf mit Vertretern der Organisation und Angehörigen der Opfer zusammen, wie Resolute Support mitteilte:

Additionally, Nicholson met with representatives of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), family members of victims, and leaders of the Kunduz community. During this meeting he expressed his condolences to members of the MSF staff as well as those affected by the hospital strike that occurred on October 3rd, 2015.

“As Commander, I wanted to come to Kunduz personally and stand before the families, and people of Kunduz, to deeply apologize for the events which destroyed the hospital and caused the deaths of the hospital staff, patients and family members. I grieve with you for your loss and suffering; and humbly and respectfully ask for your forgiveness.”

In den vergangenen Tagen war bekanntgeworden, dass das US-Militär als Folge des Bombardements Disziplinarstrafen gegen Soldaten verhängt hatte, strafrechtlich blieb der Angriff aber ohne Folgen. Die Streitkräfte waren im November nach ersten Untersuchungen zu dem Schluss gekommen, dass menschliches Versagen und organisatorische Mängel zu dem fehlgeleiteten Angriff geführt hatten, bei dem das Krankenhaus über längere Zeit bombardiert wurde. Hilferufe der Organisation an die NATO und die US-Behörden während des Angriffs änderten daran nichts. Präsident Barack Obama hatte sich bei Ärzte ohne Grenzen persönlich für das Bombardement entschuldigt.

Auch wenn in verschiedenen Meldungen (hier und hier) die Entschuldigung Nicholsons bei dieser Reise nach Kundus im Vordergrund steht: Aus Sicht des Militärs ging es dem General vor allem darum, den afghanischen Sicherheitskräften die weitere internationale Unterstützung im Kampf gegen die Taliban zuzusichern:

Resolute Support Commander Gen. John W. Nicholson visited the provincial governor of Kunduz, Assadullah Omarkhil, and his staff at the provincial governor’s palace today. He was joined by Acting Afghan Minister of Defense Mohammad Masoom Stanekzai and Acting Afghan Minister of Interior Taj Mohammad Jahid. Nicholson and Omarkhil discussed Resolute Support’s commitment to the Afghan National Defense Security Forces (ANDSF) as they prepare for the upcoming spring offensive. Nicholson also emphasized that Resolute Support remains committed to the safety and security of the people of Kunduz and Afghanistan.
“You may have heard that the Taliban want to take Kunduz again – they will not,” stated Nicholson. “The Taliban want you to think that your government and the Coalition will abandon you — we will not. The Taliban think that by posing threats to you, the brave people of Afghanistan, that you will surrender to them – you will not.”
