Slovakia and Poland are planning to build a centre for the counterintelligence capabilities of NATO countries, according to Defence Ministry spokesperson Martina Balleková. The main role of the so-called Centre of Excellence for Counterintelligence will be education and training in the field of counterintelligence. The countries that have expressed interest alongside Slovakia and Poland are Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Croatia and Slovenia.

The United Kingdom, the United States, France and other NATO countries are due to sign up in 2016. The centre should help NATO to deal with hybrid armed threats. Its establishment fits in with NATO’s objective of improving intelligence services, which is a prerequisite for making rapid and appropriate decisions.

Aus Litauen:

Lithuania became one of the Sponsoring Nations (SN) for the NATO Counter Intelligence Centre of Excellence (NATO CI COE). Also, one Lithuanian officer will be assigned to the NATO CI COE based in Krakow, Poland.
The Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of the NATO Counter Intelligence Centre of Excellence with Poland and Slovakia as Framework Nations (FN) was signed at a ceremony in Norfolk (U.S.A.) on 29 September by FN and SN representatives, including a representative of Lithuania Colonel Romualdas Petkevičius, National Liaison Representative for Transformation at the Headquarters, Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (HQ SACT), located in Norfolk.
Other Sponsoring Nations for the NATO CI COE are the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia. (…)
As the primary hub of NATO expertise in military counter-intelligence, the new COE aims to expand the capabilities of the Alliance and its member nations to enhance NATO counter-intelligence and improve interoperability. The Centre will accelerate NATO adaptation and operations by supporting the development, promotion and implementation of new policies, concepts, strategies and doctrine.
