Ukraine/Russland/NATO – der Sammler am 20. Oktober 2022

We’ve been warning since July that Iran would be planning to sell UAVs — unmanned aerial — unmanned aerial vehicles — to Russia for use against Ukraine.
In September, as we said, Russia transferred UAVs that it had purchased from Iran into Crimea to use in its war against Ukraine.
So today we can confirm that Russian military personnel that are based in Crimea have been piloting Iranian UAVs, using them to conduct strikes across Ukraine, including strikes against Kyiv in just recent days.
We assess that Iranian military personnel were on the ground in Crimea and assisted Russia in these operations. Russia has received dozens of UAVs so far and will likely continue to receive additional shipments in the future.
Furthermore, in light of Russia’s ongoing supply shortages, we are concerned that Russia may also seek to acquire advanced conventional weapons from Iran, such as surface-to-surface missiles that will almost certainly be used to support the war against Ukraine.
There’s extensive proof of their use by Russia against both military and civilian targets there. Yet both Iran and Russia continue to lie about it, denying that Iran is providing weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine. Iran and Russia, (inaudible), they can lie to the world, but they certainly can’t hide the facts.
And the fact is this: Tehran is now directly engaged on the ground and through the provision of weapons that are impacting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine — in fact, that are killing civilians and destroying civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.
So, let’s be very clear: The United States is going to pursue all means to expose, deter, and confront Iran’s provision of these munitions against the Ukrainian people. We’re going to continue to vigorously enforce all U.S. sanctions on both the Russian and Iranian arms trade. We’re going to make it harder for Iran to sell these weapons to Russia. We’re going to help the Ukrainians have what they need to defend themselves against these threats. (…)
I don’t have a number of how many Iranians are in Crimea, but we do know it’s a — there’s a relatively small number that are. And the answer for why there is — it’s a — it’s a good question.
First of all, these are systems that the Russian armed forces are not familiar using. And these are organically manufactured Iranian UAVs, and the Russians just don’t have anything in their inventory. So, it follows that they would need a little training on how to pilot these things.
Number two, there were operator — well, I’d say operator and system failures early on where either they weren’t being piloted appropriately and properly and were failing to reach targets, or the systems themselves were suffering failures and not performing to the standards that apparently the customers expected. So the Iranians decided to move in some trainers and some technical support to help the Russians use them with better lethality.(…)
What we — the information we have is that the Iranians have put trainers and tech support in Crimea, but it’s the Russians who are doing the piloting. That’s our assessment at this time.

A Russian fighter jet “released a missile” in the vicinity of a British aircraft in international airspace over the Black Sea because of a technical malfunction, the UK defence secretary, Ben Wallace, has revealed.
“We are incredibly lucky that the episode did not become worse,” said Wallace. He also accused Russia of sometimes acting recklessly by flying as close as 15ft (4.6 metres) to Nato aircraft.
The episode on 29 September has prompted Wallace to ensure that routine UK surveillance flights over the Black Sea, in place since 2019, were now escorted by armed aircraft.
He told the Commons the incident occurred in “international airspace”, adding that an “unarmed RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint” plane was “interacted with” by two Russian SU-27s, one of which “released a missile in the vicinity of the RAF Rivet Joint beyond visual range”.

• Das britische Intel Update:

On 18 October 2022, recently appointed commander of Russian forces in Ukraine, General Sergei Surovikin, told Russian media that ‘a difficult situation has emerged’ in the Kherson area.
He endorsed the previously announced plans of the occupation authorities to evacuate the civilian population.
As the overall operational commander, Surovikin’s announcement highlighting negative news about the ‘special military operation’ is highly unusual.
It likely indicates that the Russian authorities are seriously considering a major withdrawal of their forces from the area west of the Dnipro river.
A key challenge of any Russian withdrawal operation would be extracting troops and their equipment across the 1000m wide river in good order.
With all the permanent bridges severely damaged, Russia would highly likely rely heavily on a temporary barge bridge it completed near Kherson in recent days, and military pontoon ferry units, which continue to operate at several locations.

• Das Morgenbriefing des ukrainischen Generalstabs:

Operational update regarding the russian invasion as of 06:00, on October 20, 2022
The two hundred-thirty-ninths (239) day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people to a russian military large-scale invasion continues.
The enemy is trying to keep the temporarily captured territories, concentrates efforts on restraining the actions of the Defence Forces in certain directions, at the same time, it does not abandon attempts to conduct offensive actions in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions.
During the day, units of the Defence Forces repelled the attacks of the occupiers in the areas of settlements of Bilohorivka, Luhansk oblast; Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Klishchiivka, Krasnohorivka, Novomykhailivka, Nevelske, Opytne and Maryinka of the Donetsk oblast.
The enemy is shelling the positions of our troops along the contact line, carrying out engineering equipment of defensive positions and lines in separate directions and conducting aerial reconnaissance. Violating the norms of International Humanitarian Law, the laws and customs of war, it continues to strike critical infrastructure and the homes of the civilian population.
During the day, the enemy launched eleven missile and twenty-eight air strikes, carried out more than sixty-five MLRS attacks.
Areas of more than twenty-five settlements were hit by the enemy. These are, in particular, Burshtyn in the Ivano-Frankivsk oblast, Ladyzhyn in the Vinnytsia oblast, Zelenodolsk in the Dnipropetrovsk oblast, Siversk, Sloviansk and Terny in the Donetsk oblast, Znachkove in the Zaporizhia oblast, and Davydiv Brid in the Kherson oblast. For their crimes, the occupiers used cruise, aviation and anti-aircraft guided missiles. In addition, the enemy launched more than ten Iranian-made Shahed-136 unmanned aerial vehicles, more than half of which were from the territory of the republic of belarus.
The situation has not changed significantly in the Volyn, Polissya and Siversky directions.
The enemy shelled in other directions:
in the Slobozhansk direction – from artillery of various calibers, in the areas of the settlements of Hoptivka, Hryanykivka, Kolodyazne, Krasne, Ohirtseve and Strilecha of the Kharkiv oblast;
in the Kupyansk and Lyman directions – from barrel and rocket artillery, in the areas of the settlements of Berestove, Kyslivka, Pershotravneve of the Kharkiv oblast; Kovalivka, Novoyehoryvka, Novolyubivka in the Luhansk oblast and Zarichne, Terny and Torske in the Donetsk oblast;
in the Bakhmut direction – from tanks and artillery, in the areas of Andriivka, Bakhmut, Bakhmutske, Bilohorivka, Zelenopillya, Klishchiivka, Kurdyumivka, Pivnichne, Mayorsk, New York, Soledar and Yakovlivka settlements of the Donetsk oblast;
in the Avdiivka direction – from tanks, mortars, barrel and jet artillery, in the areas of Avdiivka, Vodyane, Pervomaiske, Opytne, Krasnohorivka, Maryinka, and Novomykhailivka settlements of the Donetsk oblast.
The enemy did not conduct active offensive actions in the Novopavlivskyi and Zaporizhzhia directions. Fired in the areas of more than 20 settlements along the entire contact line. Among them are Velyka Novosilka, Vremivka, Vuhledar, Zolota Nyva of the Donetsk oblast and Mykilske, Orihiv and Chervone of the Zaporizhzhia oblast.
The enemy continues to set up defensive positions in the South Buh direction. Russian enemy are shelling populated areas along the entire contact line to deter a counteroffensive of Ukrainian troops.
According to available information, reinforcements from the number of mobilized persons have arrived in the temporarily occupied territory of Luhansk oblast. Numerous cases of robberies and looting are noted. It is possible that a significant number of the mentioned imprisoned contingent arrived from penitentiary places.
According to preliminary information, the leaders of iran and the russian federation have agreed to send advisers and instructors on the use of attack UAVs to the territory of the russian federation. In particular, it is known about the training of the operators of the existing „Shahed-136“ UAVs and the promising „Arash-2“ UAVs.
There is a high probability that the russian occupiers will fire on the civilian population of the Kherson oblast. Thus, on the morning of October 19, 2022, in the temporarily occupied territory, messages were sent out calling for the evacuation of the population of Nova Kakhovka, allegedly in connection with the preparation of shelling by units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to detailed information, as a result of the strikes of the Defence Forces during the last few days, it was confirmed that enemy personnel and equipment were damaged in Zaporizhzhia oblast – up to 150 servicemen were injured and about 15 units of weapons and military equipment were destroyed.
Air Defence Forces have carried out ten strikes during the past day. The defeat of six areas of concentration of weapons and military equipment, as well as four positions of the enemy’s anti-aircraft missile systems, was confirmed. Air defence units shot down six cruise missiles, one Ka-52 helicopter and sixteen UAVs, fourteen of them „Shahed-136“. Iranian production.
Units of missile troops and artillery hit three control points, six areas of concentration of manpower, weapons and military equipment, one ammunition depot, an Electronic Warfare station and six other important objects, including a bridge and an enemy pontoon crossing.

Operational update of General Staff of the UAF regarding the russian invasion as of 18:00, on October 20, 2022
The two hundred thirty-ninth (239) day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people to a russian military large-scale invasion continues.
The enemy is trying to hold the temporarily captured territories, concentrates efforts on restraining the actions of the Defense Forces in certain directions, at the same time, does not stop trying to conduct offensive actions in the Bakhmut and Avdiivka directions.
During the current day, the enemy launched 3 missile and 20 air strikes, carried out up to 10 MLRS attacks.
Up to 20 settlements were hit by the enemy. In particular, Terny, Bakhmut, Vuhledar and Komyshuvakha of the Donetsk oblast.
The enemy has once again launched a massive attack using iranian attack UAVs on the civilian infrastructure of Ukraine. Out of 20 UAVs, 15 were successfully shot down by the Defense Forces of Ukraine.
The situation in the Volyn and Polissya directions has not changed significantly. The republic of belarus continues to support the armed aggression of the russian federation against Ukraine. The threat of missile strikes and the use of attack UAVs on the territory of Ukraine remains.
The enemy shelled in other directions:
in the Siversky direction – from mortars and barrel artillery, within the Mykolaivka and Kostobrody settlements of the Chernihiv oblast. Also, the enemy used unmanned aerial vehicles with a combat load;

In the Mosrentgen settlement of the moscow region, the mobilized were placed at the deployment point of the 27th separate motorized rifle brigade for their medical examination and further referral to the combat zone. In the course of already conducted mobilization measures, significant problems arise.

Russian troops continue to strike our power plants with missiles and drones. In the end, such Russian meanness will also fail. We are doing everything to get more modern and effective air defense and missile defense systems for Ukraine. (…)
I informed the Europeans today, during the meeting of the European Council, about the next terrorist attack, which Russia is preparing for at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant. According to our information, the aggregates and dam of the Kakhovka HPP were mined by Russian terrorists.
Now everyone in the world must act powerfully and quickly to prevent a new Russian terrorist attack. Destroying the dam would mean a large-scale disaster.
Of course, we understand that the occupiers do not care what happens to the territory of Ukraine. With this terrorist attack, they can destroy, among other things, even the possibility of supplying water from the Dnipro River to Crimea. In the event of the destruction of the Kakhovka HPP dam, the North Crimean Canal will simply disappear. And if Russia is preparing such a terrorist attack, if it is seriously considering such a scenario, it means the terrorists are clearly aware that they will not be able to keep not only Kherson, but also the entire south of our country, including Crimea.
