• Notizen aus dem Pentagon-Briefing, von Dan Lamothe von der Washington Post:
A senior U.S. defense official just concluded a background briefing about the war in Ukraine.
It’s Day 79 since Russia’s invasion. Some key points:
Most notable detail today appears to be that for the first time since Russia invaded, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke today with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. The senior defense official said the call was about an hour long and “professional.”
The United States for weeks have been trying to get in touch with senior Russian officials to keep lines of communication open. Russia has rebuffed those efforts repeatedly.
That makes the timing of today’s call with Shoigu interesting. The senior official declined to go beyond a Pentagon readout, which said Austin called for a ceasefire, and added that it “wasn’t for a lack of trying” that the U.S. had not been able to talk with Russian officials.
On the ground, the majority of the fighting is still in the Donbas region. It’s expected to remain that way. There is now “very much an artillery fight back and forth,” the senior U.S. defense official said.
Russian troops have sought to move troops across the Siverskyi Donets River, and been rebuffed repeatedly by Ukrainian artillery, the senior U.S. defense official said today.
There is also still fighting south of the town of Izyum, but Russia has struggled to make gains there. Russia has made some “incremental gains” west of the town of Popasna, the senior defense officials.
The air picture remains about the same, with Russia launching about 250 sorties in the last 24 hours, the senior defense official said. That’s consistent with past practice.
Special greetings and thanks from our artillerymen to the #American_people for the M777 howitzer. My guys know the price of artillery. First of all, they wanted to convey that this is a high-precision and very effective weapon. Together to Victory!
• Das wiederum muss man im Zusammenhang mit dem britischen Intel Update am Morgen sehen:
Russia is investing significant effort in the vicinity of Izium and Severodonetsk in an attempt to achieve a breakthrough towards Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
The primary objective on this axis is to envelop Ukrainian forces in the Joint Forces Operation area, isolating them from support or reinforcement by units in the west of the country.
Ukrainian forces successfully prevented an attempted Russian river crossing in the Donbas.
Images indicate that during the crossing of the Siverskyi Donets river west of Severodonetsk, Russia lost significant armoured manoeuvre elements of at least one Battalion Tactical Group as well as the deployed pontoon bridging equipment.
Conducting river crossings in a contested environment is a highly risky manoeuvre and speaks to the pressure the Russian commanders are under to make progress in their operations in eastern Ukraine.
Russian forces have failed to make any significant advances despite concentrating forces in this area after withdrawing and redeploying units from the Kyiv and Chernihiv Oblasts.

The attacks have resulted in the elimination of more than 300 nationalists and up to 37 armoured and motor vehicles.
Operational-tactical and army aviation have hit 3 AFU command posts, as well as 52 areas of manpower and military equipment concentration.
Missile troops and artillery have hit 17 command posts, as well as 370 areas of manpower and military equipment concentration and 5 artillery units at firing positions.
Russian air defence means have shot down 3 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles near Krasnopolie, Malaya Kamyshevakha, Kharkov Region, and Gorlovka, Donetsk People’s Republic.
