While Russia’s main operational focus remains the Sieverodonetsk-Lysychansk pocket, a week of consistently heavy shelling suggests Russia is now trying to regain momentum on the northern Izium axis.
Ukrainian forces continue to hold the line in that sector, making good use of forested terrain to assist their defence.
Over the coming weeks, Russia’s campaign will highly likely increasingly rely on echelons of reserve forces. These consist of several distinct components which Russia has almost certainly already started to field.
Russia’s Combat Army Reserve is a recent innovation of part-time but volunteer reservists, which deploy as whole units typically ear-marked for rear area security tasks.
The Human Mobilisation Resource is the sizable pool of all veterans who have served in the regular military in the last five years. Russian authorities are likely using volunteers from this category to fill out the third battalions within regular brigades.
Despite a continued shortfall in the number of deployable reservists for Ukraine, the Russian leadership likely remains reluctant to order a general mobilisation.

• Das Briefing des russischen Verteidigungsministeriums:
Russian Defence Ministry report on the progress of the special military operation in Ukraine ( June 27, 2022)
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue the special military operation in Ukraine.
On June 26, Russian Aerospace Forces launched 4 high-precision air-based missiles at the workshops of Artyom missile corporation located in Shevchenkovsky district of Kiev. This enterprise produced ordnance for Ukrainian multiple rocket-launching systems (MRLS).
According to live recording data, all of the 4 missiles have reached the target. The facility has been neutralised. Civilian infrastructure of Kiev has not been affected by high-precision armament.
Kiev regime attempted to intercept Russian high-precision missiles by the means of air defence deployed in the city. Ukrainian S-300 and Buk-M1 air defence system crews had launched over 10 air defence missiles.
Due to lack of interoperability between the launching ramps of the air defence systems and electronic facilities deployed in residential areas, 2 S-300 air defence missiles have been intercepted by Ukrainian Buk systems. One of the intercepted air defence missiles has presumably fallen down to a residential building.
Ukrainian command is trying to stop the chaotic escape of Ukrainian servicemen near Lisichansk amid the success of Russian army within liberating Donbass.
A Right Sector Nazi barrier unit was sent to hold the personnel of the first battalion from 72nd mechanised brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) near Volcheyarovka. Russian artillery has eliminated this unit.
The Ukrainian troops involved in operation towards Lisichansk are no longer controlled. Commander of 115th Independent Mechanised Brigade of the AFU who deployed its command post in the rear area has lost control over his units that caused losing 80 percent of manpower and about 70 percent of equipment of 138th Battalion from this brigade during operations.
On June 26, Russian units eliminated 2 sabotage and reconnaissance groups of mercenaries formed by 14 militants during the combats that took place 3 km from Lisichansk oil refinery (Lugansk People’s Republic).
The first group was international and consisted of citizens from various European countries. The second was formed by mercenaries only from Georgia who were parts of the so-called Georgian Legion.
This armed group is mostly composed of criminals. The eliminated Georgian mercenaries were involved in the brutal torture and murder of Russian servicemen near Kiev in March this year.
Russian Defence Ministry has information about each mercenary involved in torturing and murdering out servicemen. We have found and punished them.
Russian Federation Armed Forces continue launching attacks at military facilities located in Ukraine.
High-precision armament of Russian Aerospace Forces has neutralised the base of 106th Battalion from 63rd Mechanised Infantry Brigade of the AFU near Visunsk (Nikolayev region). Over 40 Ukrainian servicemen and 12 units of military equipment have been eliminated.
Attacks have also resulted in the elimination of AFU manpower and military equipment in 27 areas, including those that formed part of the Right Sector near Lisichansk, as well as those of Azov and Kraken near Kharkov.
5 AFU command posts and 3 munitions, missile and artillery armament depots have been neutralised near Bereznegovatoye (Nikolayev region) and Novodruzhesk (Lugansk People’s Republic).
Operational-tactical and army aviation, missile troops and artillery have neutralised: 24 command posts, artillery and mortar units in 58 areas, as well as manpower and military equipment in 304 areas.
Within the counter-battery warfare towards Donetsk, high-precision armament of Russian Aerospace Forces has neutralised: 3 Grad MRLS plattoons near Avdeyevka and Dzerzhinsk, a plattoon of M-777 155-mm howitzers near Konstantinovka, 2 Giatsint 152-mm howitzer plattoons near Kalinov and Artyomovo, as well as 2 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled artillery system plattoons near Ocheretino and Novolugansk that had been launching attacks at Donetsk and othe cities of the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Russian air defence means have destroyed 10 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles near Noviy Burluk, Arkushino, Kurulka, Semyonovka, Chervoniy Shakhtyor, Ternovaya (Kharkov region), Chernobayevka (Kherson region), Shcherbakovo (Zaporozhye region) and Petrovenki (Lugansk People’s Republic).
2 Tochka-U tactical missiles have been intercepted near Kakhovka (Kherson region), as well as 1 MRLS rocket over Snake Island.
In total, 215 airplanes and 132 helicopters, 1,373 unmanned aerial vehicles, 350 anti-aircraft missile systems, 3,830 tanks and other armored combat vehicles, 684 combat vehicles equipped with multiple rocket-launching systems, 3,025 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 3,870 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
• Notizen aus dem Pentagon-Briefing zum Ukraine-Krieg (das inzwischen auch nicht mehr regelmäßig stattfindet)
A senior U.S. defense official at the Pentagon just concluded a background briefing about the war in Ukraine.
Today is Day 124 in Russia’s invasion. Some takeaways:
Russia launched about 60 missile strikes over the weekend, hitting Kyiv, Lviv, Chernihiv and Odessa, the senior U.S. defense official says. That marks an uptick in recent Russian strike tempo.
The senior U.S. defense official says it is not clear why they launched these strikes now. One possibility is that it’s in response to the G7 meeting, the official said. Another is that it’s in response to the U.S. sending Ukraine HIMARS.
At least one strike in Kyiv over the weekend landed in a residential area near a Ukrainian factory where munitions are built, the senior U.S. defense official said. Appears that Russia tried and failed to hit it.
Ukrainian forces withdrew from the city of Severodonetsk last week. U.S. official says that while there is symbolic importance to the city falling, Ukraine also is likely to rally around the long effort by a few hundred Ukrainian troops to hold out there.
How long could this go on? The Pentagon hesitates to say, at least publicly. Russian continues to mount casualties but also to incrementally gain territory.
“I just could not give you a timeline,” the official says.
The senior defense official, asked about reports that retired Russian military leaders have been called back to active duty, says that there is “probably some veracity” but that the Pentagon can’t confirm.
The Pentagon does *not* confirm this morning that the United States will send Ukraine NASAMS, a surface-to-air missile system. But national security adviser Jake Sullivan said earlier today that conversations are ongoing, and the U.S. wants to provide more help on air defense.
The Pentagon also notes resistance to Russia in the Kherson area.
A few towns and villages west of the city have been retaken by Ukrainian forces, the senior U.S. defense official says, noting Russian officials in the area also have been assassinated.
U.S. official says the U.S. takes it “very seriously” that Putin announced he is offering to send nuclear-capable missiles to Belarus.
“I can’t think of a more irresponsible thing for a senior leader to say than to talk about the employment of nuclear weapons in this case.“
Footnote: Close observers will note the frequency of these briefings has curtailed in recent weeks. The Pentagon press corps has noted that, too.
Here’s hoping that today marks a return to earlier levels of transparency and interaction on this front. They’re certainly helpful.

Operational update regarding the #russian_invasion as of 18:00 on June 27, 2022
The one hundred twenty fourth (124) day of the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people to a russian military invasion continues.
russian occupiers continue to launch missile strikes on civilian targets in Ukraine. Today, in Kremenchuh, Poltava oblast, russian rocket hit a shopping center where civilians were staying. The number of victims is currently unknown. Rescue operations are underway.
Demonstrative and provocative actions by units of the Armed Forces of the republic of belarus in the areas bordering Ukraine are not ruled out in the Volyn and Polissya areas, as well as intensification of intelligence to clarify the positions and nature of our troops.
Air and missile strikes from the territory and airspace of the republic of belarus are expected to continue. Once again, we urge you not to ignore air alarm signals.
In the Siversky direction, units of the Armed Forces of the russian federation continue to be located in the border areas of the Bryansk and Kursk regions in order to restrain the actions of units of the Defense Forces. The enemy fired mortars near Pokrovka and Starykovo, Sumy oblast. The enemy also used jet artillery in the areas of the settlements of Porozok and Verkhnya Pozhnya, Sumy oblast.
In the Slobozhansky direction, the enemy is defending previously occupied positions, trying to prevent the advance of units of the Defense Forces and their entry to the state border of Ukraine in the north of Kharkiv region. Intelligence is trying to find weaknesses in the defense of our troops.
In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy, in order to regain lost ground, tried to carry out assault operations in the area of the settlement of Dementievka, had no success, withdrew. Also, Ukrainian soldiers successfully repulsed enemy assaults in the direction of Dovhalivka and Zalyman.
The occupiers are taking measures to quickly disguise and try to mislead our units, for which they are installing wooden models of tanks on the defensive positions.
In the Slovyansk direction, the enemy is trying to improve its tactical position and create favorable conditions for the attack on the settlements of Barvinkove and Slovyansk. Continues shelling.
Trying to take control of Mazanivka, the enemy launched an offensive from the area of the village of Dovhenke. It received a strong rebuff from the Ukrainian defenders and withdrew with losses.
In the Donetsk direction, the enemy continues to focus on attempts to surround the Defense Forces near the city of Lysychansk, trying to blockade the city from the south and southwest. Takes measures to replenish the loss of personnel, weapons and military equipment.
The enemy did not take active action in the Kramatorsk direction.
Mortar and artillery shelling was recorded in the Lysychansk direction in the areas of the settlements of Lysychansk, Verkhnokamyanka and Soledar.
The enemy led the offensive in the direction of Vovchoyarivka – Verkhnokamyanka, has partial success, is consolidated south of the Lysychansk refinery. To distract the efforts of our troops, he led the offensive in the direction of Pidlisne – Lysychansk, had no success, withdrew.
In the Bakhmut direction, it fires artillery of various calibers in the areas of the settlements of Berestove, Klynove, Bakhmut, Vershina and Travneve.
Our soldiers successfully stopped the enemy’s reconnaissance attempt by fighting in the area of Berestovo and the offensive in the direction of Midna Ruda – Klynove. In both cases, the occupiers withdrew.
The enemy has partial success in the direction of the Roty – Vershyna, trying to gain a foothold at the intersection of the E-40 highway.
In the Avdiivka, Kurakhiv, Novopavliv and Zaporizhzhia directions, in order to restrain the actions of our troops and prevent their transfer to other directions, the enemy fired mortars, tanks, barrel artillery and jet artillery at the areas of the settlements of Pisky, Avdiivka, Katerynivka, Chervone and Malynivka. It struck an air strike near Krasnohorivka.
Ukrainian soldiers stopped the occupiers‘ offensive in the direction of Petrivske-Shevchenko and pushed the enemy back.
In the South Buh direction, the aggressor continued to fire at the positions of our troops with mortars, tanks, barrel artillery and jet artillery along the entire line of contact. It is possible that the enemy will carry out assault operations in certain areas in order to reach the administrative borders of the Kherson region.
In readiness to launch missile strikes on objects on the territory of Ukraine, the enemy holds two carriers of cruise missiles of the naval base „Caliber“.
