Lagebeobachtung Ukraine, 5. Juni

RFE/RFL: Luhansk Dispatch: Nowhere To Hide

People in Luhansk have largely tried to keep their heads down and go about their business during the two months that armed separatists have occupied this city’s administration building and declared independence from Kyiv.
But the fact the city this week has witnessed some of the worst fighting in the Ukrainian crisis to date is creating a sense of panic, as residents feel trapped in a situation where neither the government nor the separatists can ensure their safety.
The fear has grown as rumors swirl around the city that the Ukrainian Air Force could be preparing to bomb separatist strongholds downtown.

Reuters aus Sloviansk (vom Mittwoch): Fighting rages in eastern Ukraine town, residents flee

Ukrainian government forces battled separatists with artillery and automatic weapons on Wednesday in a second day of fighting in and around Slaviansk, forcing many residents to flee.
The Kiev government, trying to break rebellions by pro-Russia militias, said over 300 rebels had been killed in the past 24 hours in the „anti-terrorist operation“ centred on the eastern town, a strategically located separatist stronghold.

New York Times: A Separatist Militia in Ukraine With Russian Fighters Holds a Key

We are an international battalion,” said Aleksandr Khodakovsky, the rebel commander, who led the government’s Alfa special forces unit in the Donetsk region until he resigned after the February revolution in Kiev. Mr. Khodakovsky said that Russian citizens were among his fighters, but that the “overwhelming majority” of his force of more than 500 came from eastern Ukraine. He denied any link to Russia.
As the threat of a Russian invasion into eastern Ukraine has declined and appeals for annexation by rebel politicians have gone unanswered, the pace of fighting has picked up in eastern Ukraine with both the Kiev government and the separatists trying to seize momentum.
