Islamic State wrested a Sunni Muslim village in western Iraq on Thursday from tribal defenders who put up weeks of fierce resistance, and the insurgents tightened a siege of the Yazidi minority on a mountain in the north.
The attacks showed Islamic State’s continued operating resilience despite air strikes by U.S.-led coalition forces aimed at defeating the ultra-radical Sunni jihadist group, which has captured large expanses of Iraq and neighboring Syria, beheaded prisoners and massacred people from other religious communities, and declared a medieval-style caliphate.

berichtet Reuters.

Syrian rebels have taken control over a key government checkpoint near a border crossing with Jordan after a longstanding battle with the army.
Rebels told Al Jazeera that the seizure of the Umm al-Mayathen checkpoint in Deraa province was significant in their bid to seize the Nasib border crossing. (…)
While the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group is fighting in the north and east of Syria to carve out a „caliphate“ run by Islamic law, Deraa province in the south has become a stronghold of moderate rebels fighting the regime.

Kobani may fall to Islamic State fighters even after U.S. airstrikes have focused on the Kurdish town in Syria, U.S. military officials said today.
Kurds and Islamic State remain engaged in street-by-street fighting, with Kurds holding the western part of the city as the Arab extremists continue to move in forces from other areas, according to the officials with U.S. Central Command, who briefed reporters today at the command’s headquarters in Tampa, Florida.
Providing an overview of the air campaign against Islamic State that began over Iraq in Aug. 8 and was extended into Syria a month ago, the officials said the U.S. and its allies have launched 632 airstrikes, flown almost 6,600 missions and dropped 1,700 munitions. Central Command said in a statement that the aircraft used include AC-130 gunships and Marine Corps AV-8B Harriers, as well as two strikes by AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.
